18. Mohammed Al-Ajami

Mohammed al-Ajami (محمد بن الذيب العجمي), also recognized as Mohammed Ibn al-Dheeb (محمد بن الذيب), is a Qatari poet whose literature and political activism drew global attention. While studying literature at Cairo University (جامعة القاهرة), he engaged in writing poetry that later faced severe state security charges in Qatar. In November 2011, al-Ajami was summoned by officials in Doha (الدوحة) and immediately detained.
Authorities accused him of insulting Emir Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani (حمد بن خليفة آل ثاني) and inciting overthrow of ruling system, a charge that carried a potential death penalty. During legal proceedings, al-Ajami spent five months in solitary confinement, and his trial faced postponement five times before reaching a verdict.
In November 2012, a secret trial sentenced al-Ajami to life imprisonment based on testimonies from poetry experts representing government ministries of education and culture. Defense attorney Najeeb Al Nuaimi (نجيب النعيمي) heavily criticized court procedures and accused authorities of evidence tampering. Exact basis for charges involved creative works connected to broader political movements.
Activists confirmed that his arrest stemmed from two major pieces: “Tunisian Jasmine (الياسمين التونسي)”, which praised Tunisian revolution (الثورة التونسية) and regional Arab Spring (الربيع العربي), and “The Cairo Poem (قصيدة القاهرة)”, a privately recited piece from 2010 that circulated online without his consent. In February 2013, court reduced sentence to fifteen years.
International response to detention was highly critical. Amnesty International labeled al-Ajami a prisoner of conscience, demanding immediate release if held solely for his poetry. Human Rights Watch condemned Qatar for a double standard on freedom of expression. Civil actions from international groups like PEN American Center, Code Pink, and 100 Thousand Poets for Change pressured authorities for a review.
Furthermore, an international committee linked to United Nations Human Rights Council was established in Geneva (جنيف) to advocate for his freedom. Following extensive international pressure, al-Ajami finally secured release in March 2016 through a royal pardon.

Literary evolution of Haddad represents a dynamic journey divided into distinct artistic phases. His early creative output focused heavily on political lyricism, which later transitioned toward intense linguistic experimentation and richer aesthetic exploration, exemplified by long-form works like Splinters (شظايا). A celebrated hallmark of his mature career centers on ambitious cross-media collaborations with prominent regional artists, including long-form narrative Majnun Laila (أخبار مجنون ليلى) set to music by Marcel Khalife (مارسيل خليفة), and his collaborative prose volume The Blue Impossible (المستحيل الأزرق) with Saudi photographer Saleh al-Azzaz (صالح العزاز). Between 2008 and 2015, he received four prestigious fellowships for literary residencies in Germany (ألمانيا), allowing him to complete major independent freelance projects such as The Rose of Tarafa (طرفة بن الوردة).
Global impact of Haddad is reflected in extensive international translation of his verses, notably his volume Distance Therapy (علاج المسافة) published in Europe.
